Early morning walks are a source of inspiration for me. The stillness, the rising sun altering the colors of the sky, clouds changing, Barbara Ingram, contemporary Santa Fe artistthe edges and shadows of the mountains all help me feel closely linked to the earth. I imagine the trees gripping the ground with gnarled fingers then stretching their limb-like arms reaching, unwinding, touching the sky. I try to identify with these trees when I draw them. They breathe; they stretch, they flow. they become very like human figures that reach skyward but are anchored in the earth.

In sculpture all the elements of design, line, form, color, balance, can work together with unique results. I like to use the human figure as a symbol for expression. Kenneth Clark's book, The Nude, is a source of inspiration constantly reminding me of the versatility of the human figure as a storytelling device.

When someone asks me for an artistic statement, there is little for me to say other than I simply love the doing of it.
